Armed pirates board cargo vessel off Somalia, crew reported safe
Eight armed individuals seized an unnamed cargo ship near the Horn of Africa, with monitors confirming the crew is currently safe.
Maritime authorities said a cargo ship was taken over by eight armed pirates near the Horn of Africa. Alerts were released by UK Maritime Trade Operations and the EU Maritime Security Center Indian Ocean, warning ships to travel carefully and report any suspicious activity. The crew of the seized vessel is reported to be safe at this time.
The incident is part of a broader increase in piracy, with three tankers carrying fertilizer and oil captured in April and May, and a chemical tanker seized off Yemen in July. All four of those vessels remain held off the Somali coast. The resurgence of piracy adds further challenges for international shippers navigating the region alongside other maritime threats.
Why it matters
Piracy threatens global shipping routes, raising costs and safety concerns for international trade.
