Armenia to receive four Czech-made L-39 Skyfox trainer jets in coming weeks

Armenian Defence Minister Szuren Papikjan announced a deal for four subsonic Skyfox aircraft from the Czech Republic, with deliveries expected shortly.

Armenia has signed a procurement contract with the Czech Republic for four L-39 Skyfox subsonic fighter-trainer aircraft, as confirmed on the defence minister's Facebook page and the Czech ministry’s website. Szuren Papikjan made an official trip to the Czech Republic, touring the Aero Vodochody factory where a Skyfox bearing Armenian insignia was displayed. The Skyfox is an upgraded generation of the L-39 Albatros, which has been in service with the Armenian Air Force for years.

While intended mainly for pilot training, the aircraft can be armed and is capable of engaging hostile drones. The Czech news agency ČTK reports that the first deliveries will occur within the coming weeks. This acquisition modernises Armenia's training fleet and adds a versatile platform for its air defence needs.

Why it matters

The deal upgrades Armenia's air-training capability and adds a platform that can also be used for drone defence.
