Army assault dog Tyson honored for bravery in J&K counter-insurgency
A German Shepherd serving with 2 Para Special Forces received a Mention-in-Despatches on Independence Day for actions that helped neutralise three terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.
In the Independence Day 2026 ceremony, President Droupadi Murmu approved a Mention-in-Despatches for Tyson, a German Shepherd of the Remount Veterinary Corps attached to 2 Para Special Forces, marking the only animal among 89 honorees. The award recognises his role in Operation Trashi-I on Feb 22 in the Chatroo belt of Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir, where he scouted ahead and uncovered a hidden terrorist hideout.
Tyson absorbed the first bullet as troops entered, yet continued the assault, forcing the militants to open fire and thereby confirming their location. This enabled the White Knight Corps, J&K police and CRPF to accurately engage and kill three Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. After being wounded, Tyson was airlifted to Command Hospital Udhampur for emergency care and has now recovered, remaining in high spirits. The citation highlights the vital contribution of military dogs in high-risk counter-terror operations.
