Around 10,000 Demonstrators Rally in Stockholm Over Climate Policy Ahead of Election

Roughly 10,000 people marched through Stockholm on Aug 23 to protest Sweden’s climate policies as a national election draws near.

On Aug 23, about 10,000 participants gathered in Stockholm to demand stronger action on human-induced climate change, just weeks before Sweden’s general election. The rally, coordinated by youth, sporting, union, rural and rights organisations, included prominent activist Greta Thunberg, who warned that no party’s policies align with scientific recommendations and that continued inaction could lead to collapse. Critics point to the right-wing government’s reduction of petrol taxes and its dismissal of a commission’s proposal to raise fuel levies as obstacles to meeting the 2030 transport-emission cut of 70 % and the 2045 net-zero goal.

A Verian poll cited by SVT indicates that 37 % of respondents consider climate a top election priority. Environmental leaders such as Beatrice Rindevall of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation called for immediate emission-reducing measures, citing recent European heatwaves as evidence of the crisis.

Why it matters

The protest underscores growing public pressure on Sweden’s climate agenda just before a pivotal election.
