Around 140 flights scrapped at Brussels Airport as Alyzia staff join protest

Approximately 140 flights at Brussels Airport were cancelled on Oct 9 after ground-handler Alyzia staff participated in a national demonstration, hitting UK routes.

A national manifestation scheduled for Friday, Oct 9, led Alyzia ground-handling staff at Brussels Airport to join a protest, resulting in the cancellation of roughly 140 flights. The company expects about fifty percent of the flights it handles to be disrupted, affecting thousands of travelers, particularly on Brussels Airlines services to London Heathrow and Manchester. British Airways flights on the same day are still slated to operate, and flights to Edinburgh are unaffected.

Additional cancellations involve routes to Paris, Budapest, Madrid and Chicago. Passengers are being notified by the airlines that work with Alyzia about their options. The airport apologized for the inconvenience, and while another union action is planned for Monday, Oct 12, officials say it will not impact air traffic, though public transport to the airport may face delays.

Why it matters

The protest disrupts major European air travel, affecting thousands of passengers and key UK connections.
