Around 160,000 exempted taxpayers may keep using e-Invoicing voluntarily
Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong said roughly 160,000 taxpayers who are now exempt from e-Invoicing can choose to continue using the system.
In response to a parliamentary query, Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong clarified that about 160,000 taxpayers who were registered for e-Invoicing but are now exempt can decide whether to keep the system. These entities are part of the 1.1 million MSMEs with yearly sales at or below RM3 million, which the government exempted from mandatory e-Invoicing starting 1 September 2026. Liew said 164,435 of them have voluntarily continued with the digital platform.
He emphasized that the choice remains open, allowing firms to either persist with e-Invoicing or abandon it. The move aims to reduce bureaucratic strain on small businesses still coping with post-COVID challenges. He also referenced earlier rollout phases for larger companies, noting that firms with sales over RM100 million began using e-Invoicing on 1 August 2024, followed by successive thresholds down to RM3 million.
