Around 2,000 French abuse survivors seek reparations while seven prepare to meet the Pope
France's Independent National Authority for Recognition and Reparation (INIRR) says roughly 2,000 individuals alleging sexual abuse by priests or other church officials have submitted requests for reparations as the agency approaches the end of its five‑year term. To date INIRR has rendered 1,184 decisions and the average award is about 36,892 euros paid from a church‑funded special account, with claimants also eligible for a formal acknowledgment letter and optional counseling or documentation assistance.
The agency will stop accepting new submissions on August 31 but will continue to support existing claimants. Meanwhile, seven survivors are scheduled to meet the Pope during his visit to France, insisting that their core demands remain unchanged and clarifying that dialogue does not equate to endorsing past abuses; five of them have identified themselves, while two remain unnamed, including a victim of Abbé Pierre, and they have met with French bishops beforehand.
