Around 20 Long Beach homes evacuated as storm-driven surf damages seawall
Long Beach officials ordered the evacuation of roughly 20 residences on the peninsula after Tropical Storm Marie caused severe damage to the seawall and boardwalk.
In response to Tropical Storm Marie, Long Beach authorities evacuated about 20 homes along the Long Beach Peninsula, specifically between 63rd and 67th Place on Seaside Walk. Inspectors discovered that the seawall and boardwalk were weakened and that concrete slabs between several houses had cracked or buckled, some fissures extending to the walls. The area has been hit by unusually high tides, with water levels reported at 6.7 feet on Sunday, 7 feet on Monday evening, and a forecast of 7.2 feet for Tuesday.
The evacuations were issued as a precaution while the Building and Safety Bureau evaluates the homes’ structural safety. The city has closed the peninsula to through traffic, allowing only resident vehicles, and has kept Junipero Beach parking lot closed through Tuesday as crews work on mitigation and response.
