Around 60 Residents Evacuated After Smoke-Filled Fire Hits Anderlecht Building

Firefighters were alerted just after 1:30 a.m. to a fire emitting dense smoke in an Anderlecht apartment building. Upon arrival, many residents were already outside, and others were still exiting the premises. The Brussels-Midi police established a safety perimeter and assisted with the evacuation, while a Stib bus was commandeered to provide temporary shelter for the evacuees.

Walter Derieuw, the fire service spokesperson, said about 60 inhabitants were evacuated and several experienced smoke-inhalation symptoms, triggering a medical response coordinated with the MUG doctor. A priority internal emergency plan and a psychosocial intervention plan were also activated. On-site examinations were conducted, but no one required hospitalisation, and the fire’s origin near a garbage bin was swiftly contained.
