Around 70 firefighters battle blaze in 22-storey London tower block
A fire broke out on the 17th floor of a 22-storey residential tower in Poplar, London, prompting a response of roughly 70 firefighters.
At 4:35 a.m. a blaze erupted in a flat on the 17th floor of a 22-storey tower block on Blackwall Way in Poplar, East London. The London Fire Brigade mobilised ten fire appliances and approximately 70 firefighters from stations in Poplar, Whitechapel, Plaistow, Stratford, Shadwell, East Ham, East Greenwich, Bethnal Green and Greenwich. Crews fought the fire for more than two hours, finally bringing it under control at 6:41 a.m. The fire damaged roughly half of the structure, but evacuation procedures succeeded, with 50 residents leaving the building and a woman and child escaping unharmed before the fire crews arrived. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
