Arrest warrant issued for Rep. Leandro Leviste over Public Service Act breach

A Makati court issued an arrest warrant for Batangas 1st District Representative Leandro Leviste for allegedly violating the Public Service Act, with bail set at P72,000.

On October 5, the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 235 issued an arrest warrant for Batangas 1st District Representative Leandro Leviste, alleging he violated Section 25 of the Public Service Act (Commonwealth Act 146, as amended by RA 11659). Judge Ricardo A. Moldez II signed the order, stipulating bail of P72,000 and instructing law-enforcement officers to take Leviste into custody and present him before the court.

A copy of the warrant was sent to the Philippine National Police Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management at Camp Crame and to the relevant police chief. The court refused to provide a statement when contacted. This development places a sitting legislator under criminal proceedings for an alleged breach of public-service regulations.

Why it matters

It shows that a sitting lawmaker can face criminal action for alleged violations of public-service law.
