ASEAN Leaders Urged to Convert Power Grid Plans into Concrete Action
Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof called on ASEAN to move from pledges to tangible steps for a regional power grid, citing the operational LTMS project as proof of concept.
At the Singapore International Energy Week, Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Fadillah Yusof appealed to ASEAN to translate its power-grid aspirations into real-world projects. He pointed to the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore (LTMS) Power Integration Project, which has been facilitating electricity trade among the four countries since 2022, as a tangible example of multilateral grid cooperation.
Fadillah emphasized that the ASEAN Power Grid is more than infrastructure; it is a strategic link for regional energy security, efficiency, and renewable integration. He noted that interconnected systems provide flexibility and resilience during both stable periods and disruptions. The minister reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to advance its own energy transition while collaborating with Singapore, other ASEAN members, and international partners to make the grid a reality. He concluded that the region’s energy future depends on collective action rather than isolated national efforts.
Why it matters
Regional power integration can lower energy costs, boost renewable use, and improve energy security across Southeast Asia.
