Asian markets tumble as Kospi plunges and Brent crude slips below $106
The GIFT Nifty hinted at a modest rise for India's Nifty50, while Asian equities fell sharply, led by a more-than-6% drop in South Korea's Kospi, and Brent crude fell to $105.4 a barrel.
Ahead of the trading day, the GIFT Nifty futures rose 22 points to 22,408.50, suggesting a gentle gain for India's Nifty50 despite negative global cues. Across Asia, equity markets fell sharply, with South Korea's Kospi plunging more than 6%, the steepest decline in the region, while Japan's one outlet 225 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 2.7% and 0.82% respectively. In the United States, the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 ended the previous session down 0.44% and 0.06%, whereas the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 0.38% higher.
Brent crude futures on the ICE fell 1.2% to $105.4 a barrel as traders weighed the impact of additional Russian diesel shipments. Precious metals also weakened, with gold and silver futures down 0.23% and 0.71%. Meanwhile, several Indian firms—including Anand Rathi Share And Stock Brokers, GTPL Hathway, Hero Motors, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company, and Transformers and Rectifiers (India)—are set to report quarterly results, and the Vaibhav Vyapaar IPO opened for bids targeting ₹42.10 crore.
