Assistant football coach throws helmet at player during Long Island practice

At Commack High School on Long Island, a volunteer assistant football coach, identified as the head coach’s son, allegedly threw a helmet at a 16-year-old varsity player during an Aug. 26 practice. The teen was standing up from the bench when the helmet struck his face mask, leaving him bleeding and in need of three stitches under his right eye, with doctors checking for a concussion. The boy’s parents, Laura Werner and Cary Werner, claim the coach lacked proper certification and endangered their son’s safety.

Suffolk County police confirmed they are investigating the incident, while the Commack School District and the coach have not responded to requests for comment. Several teammates witnessed the throw but could not confirm the coach’s intent.
