Athens mayor keeps Grava schools closed, shifts to online lessons over gas leak concerns
Schools in Grava will stay shut and lessons will move online after mayor Haris Doukas cited a gas odor and pending safety report.
Mayor Haris Doukas of Athens declared that the school complexes in the Grava district will stay closed following reports of a natural-gas odor and pending inspection results. Over the past three days, a gas company, together with municipal technicians, has performed thorough checks of the gas network, and a conclusive report is slated for delivery this evening. The electricity market operator ΤΕΕ has not been granted entry to the facilities, and neither the Ministry of Education nor the Ministry of Civil Protection has appeared, prompting Doukas to accuse them of neglect.
He urged the education ministry to issue an immediate directive to ΤΕΕ for rapid safety examinations and to obtain a legal-entity report. Until a definitive safety determination is reached, all classes will be delivered through tele-education to safeguard students, teachers, and staff.
Why it matters
