Atlantic tropical depression forms, expected to drift northeast then southwest

The National Hurricane Center announced the formation of Tropical Depression Six in the eastern subtropical Atlantic, an area it had been monitoring for possible development. The system is located approximately 525 miles southwest of the Azores and is moving north at about two miles per hour. Forecast models suggest a northeastward motion over the next 24 to 36 hours, followed by a southwest turn a couple of days later.

The depression may strengthen slightly in the first 24 hours, then gradually weaken thereafter, with maximum sustained winds near 35 miles per hour and occasional higher gusts. No coastal watches or warnings are currently in effect, and the agency reports no hazards threatening land at this time.
