Audacity 4.0 launches with modern UI and new editing tools
The open-source audio editor Audacity has been updated to version 4.0, featuring a Qt-based interface and several new editing capabilities.
Version 4.0 of Audacity, the 26-year-old open-source audio-editing suite, arrives with a complete visual overhaul built on the Qt framework, introducing a Home view for recent projects and customizable workspaces. The redesign brings modern editing actions such as moving and overlapping clips, multi-clip selection, grouping, a dedicated split tool, and non-destructive trimming that can be reversed. Clip envelopes now allow volume shaping and fades without modifying the source audio, and all built-in effects have refreshed interfaces.
Muse Group emphasizes that existing keyboard shortcuts and the familiar track-timeline layout remain intact, and projects from Audacity 3 open without issue. The software stays free and open source, downloadable from GitHub or MuseHub, and the company thanked the community for its contributions.
