The Government Accountability Office has confirmed that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) misrepresented savings from a major Defense Health Agency IT contract, which was never actually cancelled. The five-year, indefinite-delivery contract, valued at $1.76 billion and covering IT support for more than 700 military treatment facilities, stayed in place with no reduction in scope or funding. Nevertheless, DOGE’s “Wall of Receipts” listed the contract as a $1.7 billion saving, contributing to a total claimed saving of $215 billion.
GAO findings show that DOGE also reported $61 billion in savings from 13,476 contracts, but 2,503 of those contracts—accounting for $27.4 billion—were never terminated. The audit highlights that Pentagon officials met with DOGE, discussed the contract, and ultimately did not pursue termination, yet the savings claim persisted. Critics argue that such misreporting obscures true waste and could jeopardize critical IT services essential to military health operations.
