Audit Finds Only 16 of 736 Delhi Parks Equipped with CCTV After Teen Gang Rape
A safety audit ordered by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu showed that merely 16 of the Delhi Development Authority’s 736 parks have CCTV cameras, a shortfall highlighted after a 17-year-old was allegedly gang-raped in Aastha Kunj Park.
Following the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park, Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu directed a safety audit of Delhi Development Authority parks. The review identified 190 high-risk, 258 medium-risk and 288 low-risk parks out of a total of 736, with only 16 locations currently fitted with CCTV cameras. Authorities plan to add lighting to 520 parks and install cameras in 323 more, while 163 parks will receive lockable gates and 233 will have missing grills repaired.
Night patrols now cover 245 major parks and bike patrols operate in all high-risk sites; 134 parks are earmarked for armed guards. Biometric attendance has been activated in 602 parks, and safety boards and additional signage are being rolled out. A central dashboard and weekly senior-officer inspections aim to standardize patrolling, guard performance, and police coordination across the city’s green spaces.
Why it matters
The audit exposes critical security gaps in Delhi’s public parks, prompting urgent safety upgrades after a high-profile sexual assault.
