AUF delegates reaffirm opposition to Norwegian EU membership at national congress
At its recent national meeting, the Arbeidernes ungdomsfylking (AUF) voted overwhelmingly to keep its stance against Norway joining the EU.
The AUF national congress concluded with a clear majority maintaining the youth wing's traditional 'no' position on Norwegian EU accession. Prior to the meeting, five central board members put forward a motion to adopt a positive view of EU membership, provided Norway kept sovereignty over its monetary system, central banking, energy policy and fisheries resources. The motion was unable to persuade the broader delegate body and was dismissed without a formal tally.
Press liaison Oda Medhus told reporters that the dissenting members could not sway the congress, and the organization reaffirmed its existing stance. The decision aligns with AUF’s historical role in opposing EU membership in past referendums.
Why it matters
AUF’s stance influences the broader political debate on Norway’s relationship with the EU.
