AUR MP Dan Tanasă charged with inciting hatred against Asian and African workers
AUR deputy Dan Tanasă has been indicted for publicly urging hatred and discrimination toward Asian and African laborers in Romania.
Romanian prosecutors linked to the High Court of Cassation and Justice have brought charges against AUR parliamentarian Dan Tanasă for allegedly inciting hatred and discrimination against Asian and African workers. The accusation derives from a public social-media message posted on 19 August 2025, which called on consumers to refuse orders not delivered by Romanians and warned against a "massive immigration" of unskilled labor from those regions.
The indictment stresses that parliamentary immunity protects only political votes and opinions expressed in the exercise of the mandate, not statements unrelated to legislative duties. The matter has been forwarded to the Supreme Court of Cassation, which will hear the case. Authorities argue that such hate-filled rhetoric can seriously undermine social cohesion. This legal action represents a rare instance of a Romanian lawmaker facing criminal liability for hate speech.
Why it matters
The case tests the limits of parliamentary immunity and signals a crackdown on hate speech by elected officials.
