Auriga Space validates electromagnetic Hermes counter-drone system in desert trial

Auriga Space completed its first field test of the Hermes electromagnetic counter-drone launcher, firing supersonic projectiles from a truck-mounted container in the Mojave Desert.

Auriga Space successfully executed its inaugural in-field demonstration of the Hermes electromagnetic counter-drone system, which is housed in a 10-foot shipping container and can be powered by diesel or solar energy. The unit was transported on a flatbed truck from Orange County, California, to the Mojave Desert, where it endured extreme heat and was fired more than a dozen times at supersonic speeds exceeding Mach 1.

Targets included a watermelon, glass panes and a stationary drone, showcasing the launcher’s flexibility to accommodate various projectile shapes. CEO Winnie Lai emphasized that the system eliminates the need for solid-rocket motors, allowing a single launcher to fire thousands of small, reusable effectors. The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command has signed a cooperative agreement with Auriga to further develop electromagnetic interceptors, aligning with the Pentagon’s push for affordable, layered counter-drone defenses.
