Australia to bar celebrities and athletes from gambling ads starting 2027
The Australian Communications and Media Authority issued guidance that, from Jan. 1 2027, celebrities, professional athletes and influencers cannot appear in gambling advertisements on any platform.
Australia’s media regulator, the Australian Communications and Media Authority, published preliminary guidance on a forthcoming ban that will prevent celebrities, current or former professional athletes, and social media influencers from being used in gambling advertisements. The restriction will apply to all media channels, including TV, radio, news websites, online gaming platforms and social networks. Licensed online betting providers will also be barred from entering sponsorship or promotional agreements involving such individuals from the same date.
The ACMA said the guidance is intended to clarify the new obligations and outline any exemptions that may apply. The rule is set to take effect on Jan. 1 2027, giving the industry time to adjust. This marks a significant step in tightening the promotion of gambling in Australia.
Why it matters
It limits the use of high-profile figures to market gambling, aiming to reduce exposure and potential harm to the public.
