Australian authorities probe reports of former ADF soldier's possible death in Ukraine

Australian officials are investigating reports that a former Australian Defence Force member, nicknamed “Mozzie,” might have died while acting as a volunteer combat medic with Ukraine’s International Legion Med Team Alpha. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has sought clarification from Ukrainian authorities, and one outlet has been asked to withhold the soldier’s full name for privacy reasons. Shadow Minister for Defence Personnel Phil Thompson honored the individual on social media, noting his reputation for putting others first and saving lives on the battlefield.

Mozzie’s background includes service in the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment and prior deployments to Papua New Guinea. A video posted by Med Team Alpha shows a masked soldier identifying himself as “Mozzie from Australia,” explaining his motivation to apply his military skills in Ukraine. The Ukrainian Military Ombudsman reports roughly 16,000 foreign volunteers from at least 72 nations are fighting alongside Ukrainian forces.
