Australian Businessman Sentenced to Over Three Years for Supplying China Spy Network
Alexander Csergo received a three-year-six-month prison term after a jury found he aided Chinese intelligence operatives.
A jury in March found Alexander Csergo guilty of assisting Chinese spies, leading to a sentence of three years and six months, with eligibility for parole in October after credit for time served. Between May and December 2022, Csergo prepared plagiarised analyses on Australia’s defence arrangements, lithium mining, German politics, and other sensitive subjects, delivering them in person to the operatives known as Ken and Evelyn.
The relationship started after a LinkedIn approach by a woman claiming affiliation with a Chinese think-tank, and Csergo was expected to know the agents worked for China’s Ministry of State Security. He falsely claimed interviews with figures such as former prime minister Kevin Rudd and was paid in cash envelopes. While the judge said the activity was not highly sophisticated, he stressed the importance of deterring similar foreign-interference attempts. No evidence was found that Csergo acted on a later “shopping list” of topics provided in early 2023.
