Australian consumers feel inflation hit from fast-food to high-end tech
Rising fuel costs are prompting Australian retailers and restaurants to raise prices on items ranging from discount meals to premium laptops.
Fuel price shocks are now feeding through to a broad range of consumer products in Australia, according to recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showing modest increases in food, alcohol and apparel costs. Independent economist Chris Richardson warned that businesses are beginning to embed higher costs into their pricing. McDonald’s lifted the price of its McSmart Meal after a 12-month freeze, and Apple raised the price of the Macbook Neo amid a global shortage of memory components.
Major grocery chains have announced higher shelf prices for items like olive-oil dressing and energy drinks, and discount retailer Aldi has also raised prices on several products. Hospitality operators report higher electricity, wage and ingredient expenses, leading some to adjust menus or remove long-standing dishes.
