Australian EV sales double, hitting one vehicle every 100 seconds

A new report from the Electric Vehicle Council shows Australian electric-car sales more than doubled year-on-year, with 157,957 units sold between January and June - a 117% rise - equating to one EV every 100 seconds. Conventional gasoline and diesel vehicle sales fell 14% over the same period. EVs accounted for roughly 25% of all new registrations, up 12.1% from the previous year, as households seek lower running costs amid a fuel crisis.

The total EV fleet reached 612,000, and officials say the nation is on schedule to hit a million EVs on the road by next year. The Australian Capital Territory leads with 44% of new registrations being electric, while Melbourne’s Tarneit postcode shows the highest local uptake. Growth is credited to a national vehicle efficiency standard that has broadened model availability and price competitiveness.
