Australian grocery prices jump 7% across major chains, Choice survey shows
A Choice survey found that the cost of a standard grocery basket rose 7% at Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA between March and June.
Choice’s tenth quarterly price survey, funded by the Albanese government, compared prices of eight staple items at 104 supermarkets in June. Overall, the basket cost $43.62, up $2.79 (7%) since the March survey, outpacing the 0.6% rise in the national consumer price index. IGA experienced the biggest jump at 11%, followed by Aldi at 8% and Coles at 6%; Woolworths recorded only a 2% increase.
Strawberries drove roughly half of the total rise, soaring 37% to $6.41. A separate “spotlight” basket of healthier foods again showed Aldi as the most affordable option. The report arrives ahead of the Reserve Bank’s expected fourth rate hike of 2026, aimed at tempering inflation.
