Australian Hiker Missing in Peru's Remote Huayhuash Mountains After 13 Days
Jordan Yap, a 30-year-old from Melbourne, has been uncontacted for nearly two weeks while trekking alone in Peru's Huayhuash range, prompting a local rescue effort.
Jordan Yap left Melbourne for a solo trek through the rugged Huayhuash circuit in Peru on September 14, planning a ten-day off-grid adventure. He did not return to his hotel, missed a scheduled flight, and did not contact his partner Anita, leading his family to report him missing. Fellow hikers reported his last sighting on day three of the expedition.
After difficulty reaching Peruvian officials, the family engaged the local rescue organization Socorro Andino Peruano, which began a search operation at 3 a.m. Melbourne time on Friday. Vinh Dao, Yap’s father, is arranging to fly to Peru and is urging the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to intervene with local police, emphasizing that time is critical. A DFAT spokesperson confirmed consular assistance is being provided to the family.
