Australian Institute of Sport settles abuse claims with over $3 million payout

The Australian Institute of Sport completed a restitution phase that awarded more than $3 million to over 225 former scholarship holders who were abused between 1981 and 2013. Payments varied between $5,000 and $50,000 per athlete and are part of a broader four-year program managed by the Australian Sports Commission. ASC chief Kieran Perkins said the money is just one component, alongside counselling and giving survivors a voice.

He reiterated that an apology was issued in 2022 and that the program aims to prevent future abuse. The ASC also released a wellbeing survey showing most athletes thriving, though it highlighted ongoing challenges for para athletes, people with disability, and First Nations participants. Perkins noted the need to embed supportive practices deeper into community sport.
