Australian man charged with murder of Thai teen found in suitcase appears in court

Simon Peter Carman, a 45-year-old man from Western Australia, will appear before a Pattaya court for the first time on Friday morning after being charged with the murder of 17-year-old Thai teenager Tunchanok Dunhomla. Prosecutors have lodged four counts against him: intentional murder, concealing a corpse, sexual offences against a minor and abduction. According to Thai police, Carman invited the girl to his hotel room for sexual services on June 25, and a disagreement over a 500-baht payment escalated into a fatal altercation.

The victim’s naked body was later found stuffed inside a black suitcase discarded in roadside vegetation. Carman was detained by immigration officials at Suvarnabhumi Airport shortly before a scheduled flight to Perth and has remained in Pattaya Remand Prison for almost three months. In a recent television interview he maintained his innocence, attributing scratches on his body to spider bites, and expressed sorrow for the family while hoping for bail or acquittal. He has received limited consular contact, only from Australian embassy representatives.
