Australian National University faces regulator-mandated reforms to retain university status
The higher education regulator has imposed new conditions on the Australian National University that it must meet to keep its registration, targeting governance, culture and risk management.
A compliance assessment launched in June 2025 found the Australian National University falling short on several fronts, including institutional culture, conflicts of interest, confidentiality, risk management, informed decision-making and record-keeping. In response, the higher education regulator issued four conditions that the university must satisfy to retain its registration. These conditions focus on overhauling governance structures and raising the capacity and competence of council members.
The regulator warned that non-compliance could threaten the university’s ability to operate. ANU officials have been tasked with addressing the identified shortcomings within the regulator’s stipulated timeframe. The action follows intense political and media scrutiny of the university’s management practices.
