A troop carrier rolled over during a training exercise at Mount Bundey in the Northern Territory at around 5 p.m. on Monday, killing 28-year-old Corporal Brendan Hannam and injuring six others. Two of the injured are in stable condition at Royal Darwin Hospital, with three more receiving care at the barracks hospital on the base. Hannam served as a junior non-commissioned officer in the 5/7 Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, and had completed two operational tours in Afghanistan in 2019 under Operation Highroad, as well as training Ukrainian soldiers with the British Armed Forces under Operation Kudu.
Lieutenant General Susan Coyle praised his dedication and noted his aspirations to become a medical technician, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to his family and the broader defence community. The tragedy comes months after the death of Warrant Officer Class 2 Lachlan Muddle, who was killed in a parachute entanglement during a training jump.
