Australian university creates AI robot to train teachers for tough parent talks
Researchers at La Trobe University have built an AI-driven robot named Fletch that simulates angry parents, letting trainee teachers rehearse challenging conversations.
La Trobe University in Australia has developed an AI-powered talking robot called Fletch that mimics disgruntled parents, providing a realistic practice environment for preservice teachers. The system incorporates insights from experienced educators and reproduces situations such as concerns over grades or disputes over suspensions, altering its reactions according to the trainee’s input. Professor Therese Keane highlighted that exposure to verbal aggression contributes to teacher stress, burnout, and retention problems, and that Fletch fills a training gap for early-career teachers.
Former Melbourne principal Henry Grossek noted a rise in parent aggression and endorsed the robot as a non-threatening rehearsal tool. The robot will initially be used with La Trobe’s teacher candidates, and a number of schools in Victoria have already committed to employing it for staff training.
Why it matters
It gives new teachers a risk-free way to practice de-escalating tense parent interactions, addressing teacher stress and retention.
