Australian voters lose confidence in Labor's economic stewardship as debt worries rise
A new Resolve poll shows growing concern over federal debt and a sharp drop in Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s approval, while support for Labor’s economic management slips.
In a Resolve poll conducted from September 6 to 12, 74% of respondents expressed concern about the federal debt and 48% favored cutting government spending. Labor’s primary vote remained at 28%, but its perceived ability to manage the economy slipped to 23%, only marginally above One Nation’s 21% and behind the Liberals at 27%. The poll also recorded a decline in Albanese’s personal approval, with his preferred-prime-minister rating falling three points to 29%, while Angus Taylor’s rating rose two points to 21% within the margin of error.
Trust in Albanese suffered, with 23% saying broken budget promises reduced their confidence. Despite these trends, a majority still backed Labor’s lower-house price policy, and One Nation’s expected election win rose sharply to 28%.
