Austria drops to fourth place in Greenpeace climate ticket affordability ranking

In Greenpeace’s annual climate ticket ranking that evaluates public-transport affordability in 30 European countries and capitals, Austria slipped to fourth place, overtaken by Luxembourg, Malta and Slovenia. The drop is attributed to a steep increase in bus and railway fares, with the Austrian climate ticket climbing almost 28 percent and Vienna’s local tickets rising similarly. Only Germany recorded a higher price surge among the eight nations offering a national ticket.

By contrast, Hungary and the Czech Republic kept fares unchanged, and Spain and Slovenia introduced nationwide tickets this year. Greenpeace cited the Austrian government’s earlier fuel-price brake but noted the absence of a comparable measure for transport costs, urging Mobility Minister Peter Hanke to adopt social tariffs and push for a continent-wide climate ticket.
