Austrian Airlines flight diverted to Sofia after bomb threat from Tel Aviv

A bomb threat forced an Austrian Airlines plane bound for Vienna to make an emergency landing in Sofia, where all passengers were secured after a sweep found no explosives.

An Austrian Airlines Airbus traveling from Tel Aviv to Vienna was diverted to Sofia after a bomb threat prompted Bulgarian officials to dispatch a MiG-29 fighter for escort. The aircraft, with 51 passengers and six crew members, entered Romanian airspace at roughly 21:10 before heading south and emitting an emergency signal. Upon touchdown, the Bulgarian Ministry of Transport supervised a comprehensive inspection of the aircraft, crew and passengers, finding no hazardous items.

Travelers were immediately taken to safety and the flight continued once the investigation was completed. This episode comes after a late-September incident on a FlyDubai service where a co-pilot attempted a cockpit takeover en route to Tel Aviv, underscoring rising security concerns for flights linked to Israel.
