Austrian army logistics hampered by overcrowded depots and insufficient vehicle shelters
A recent audit by the Austrian Court of Auditors found the Bundesheer’s logistics infrastructure severely overstretched, with storage sites full and many vehicles lacking proper cover.
According to the Austrian Court of Auditors, the Bundesheer’s logistics network is in a critical state, with storage facilities and clothing depots operating at capacity and forcing material onto ad-hoc transport and storage paths. Overcrowding has led to inadequate shelter for vehicles of the 3. Jägerbrigade, leaving Pandur Evolution and Dingo 2 transporters exposed to rain, mold, and animal damage.
Former logistics commander Andreas Pernsteiner confirmed that the situation has not improved since his tenure and attributes it to past budgetary pressure and the closure of large barracks like the Hummel-Kaserne and Magdeburg-Kaserne. The audit also found that 60-70 % of maintenance for the brigade is outsourced to civilian firms. In response, the defence ministry said it plans to expand storage capacity and add new workshops while continuing equipment procurement.
Why it matters
Logistical shortfalls could limit Austria's military readiness and increase equipment wear.
