Austrian authorities target 20 right-wing suspects in nationwide raid
Austrian police carried out a coordinated operation across all nine states, resulting in charges and searches against 20 alleged right-wing extremists.
On Tuesday, Austrian law-enforcement agencies launched a “Joint Action Day” targeting the far-right, coordinated by the Directorate for State Security and Intelligence and state security and extremism-combat offices in all nine federal states. The operation led to criminal complaints and administrative actions against 20 individuals accused of breaching the ban law and of hate-speech offenses. Investigators examined publicly accessible communications on platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook to identify the suspects.
A person was detained in Vorarlberg on the prosecutor’s request, and house searches were carried out in Vienna, Lower Austria, Tyrol, Upper Austria, Burgenland and Vorarlberg, securing numerous pieces of evidence. Two provisional weapons bans were issued and threat-assessment interviews were conducted. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner emphasized the need to combat all forms of extremism with full force.
