Austrian households' financial assets surpass the trillion-euro mark for the first time
The OeNB reports that Austrian private households now hold financial assets exceeding one trillion euros, driven mainly by bank deposits.
The Austrian National Bank announced that the financial wealth of domestic private households crossed the trillion-euro threshold in Q2 2026, reaching 1.011 trillion euros. Bank deposits constitute the biggest share at 34%, followed by participations and securities, each at 24%. Over the last ten years, household financial assets have risen markedly, with deposits still dominant but equity and bond investments becoming more prominent.
The savings rate stayed relatively high in 2025 despite a slight decline, and the bank expects it to fall further this year. Household debt amounted to 214 billion euros in June 2026, representing 21% of financial assets, lower than the Euro-area average of 26% and decreasing year-on-year as assets grew faster than liabilities.
Why it matters
Rising household wealth and low debt ratios signal a strengthening Austrian economy and affect consumer spending and financial stability.
