Austrian minister proposes longer hours for owner-run shops and unmanned stores
State Secretary Josef Schellhorn said the government will draft proposals to extend opening hours for owner-operated stores and for unmanned local retailers.
In a move toward liberalising retail hours, State Secretary Josef Schellhorn of NEOS outlined two initiatives: extending opening times for owner-run shops and for unmanned local supply points such as smart stores. He emphasized that the debate does not yet include Sunday openings, noting that modern consumer habits require updated regulations. The draft measures will be forwarded to coalition partners ÖVP and SPÖ for joint review within the week. Meanwhile, Rewe-Österreich chief Marcel Haraszti has called for raising the weekly limit from 72 to 78 hours, whereas the retail chain Spar is satisfied with one outlet 72-hour framework and existing special provisions.
Why it matters
Longer shop hours could reshape Austrian retail, affecting consumers, small business owners, and competition.
