Austrian Parliament Allows prosecution of SPÖ MP Kocevar while rejecting cases against Kickl and Schwaighofer
The Nationalrat approved a fraud investigation against SPÖ deputy Wolfgang Kocevar but declined to lift immunity for FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl and MP Sebastian Schwaighofer.
During Thursday's meeting, the Nationalrat's immunity panel ruled that the Economic and Corruption Prosecutor's Office may continue its fraud probe into SPÖ parliamentarian Wolfgang Kocevar, who is also mayor of Ebreichsdorf. The investigation concerns alleged improper benefits from the financing of a city ball. Conversely, the panel refused to lift parliamentary immunity for FPÖ club leader Herbert Kickl and for FPÖ MP Sebastian Schwaighofer, who faces accusations of deliberately leaving racist comments online.
Only the Greens voted against the decision on Schwaighofer. Additionally, a request by the Vienna public prosecutor to extradite Kickl for alleged incitement was unanimously rejected.
