Austrian prosecutors launch probe into former Meinl Bank executives over alleged fraud

The Wirtschafts- und Korruptionsstaatsanwaltschaft confirmed investigations into former board members and the ex-chairman of the collapsed Meinl Bank for alleged embezzlement and misuse of assets.

The Austrian Economic and Corruption Prosecutor's Office announced that it is pursuing criminal investigations against Julius Meinl V, former supervisory board chairman, multiple former executives and other responsible parties of the now-defunct Meinl Bank, which was renamed Anglo Austrian Bank before filing for bankruptcy in 2020. Prosecutors allege that the suspects abused their authority to shrink the bank’s assets, including selling valuable stakes at low prices, extending credit to overseas affiliates, and paying inflated advisory fees.

They are also accused of misusing funds from the bank’s Caribbean subsidiary, Meinl Bank Antigua, and of moving personal assets, such as a villa in Vienna-Döbling and land in Styria, to relatives or related companies to shield them from creditors. A Viennese court has already ordered the seizure of several properties linked to the case.

Why it matters

The probe could expose large-scale financial misconduct that contributed to a major bank’s collapse and affect creditor recoveries.
