Austrian women's hockey squad pressures federation after poor conditions
The Austria women's national ice hockey team, missing eleven key players, publicly pressed the Austrian Ice Hockey Association over inadequate facilities and support.
When Austria competed in the Women's European Cup of Nations in Slovakia, the squad was without eleven of its top players due to a stand-off with the Austrian Ice Hockey Association (ÖEHV). Captain Anna Meixner explained that the team had endured cold dressing rooms, insufficient catering, no per-diem payments and reliance on hand-me-down gear, prompting a letter of nine demands sent in March. After months of quiet negotiations failed, the players went public, even threatening to boycott the upcoming World Championship in Denmark, Austria's first appearance at the top IIHF tournament.
Following the Slovakian tournament, the ÖEHV issued a response on August 31, promising clearer per-diem rules, improved lodging, travel support and a new team-wear agreement. Meixner expressed cautious optimism, noting the dialogue now feels more balanced, while emphasizing the goal of securing better conditions for future generations of Austrian women’s hockey players.
Why it matters
The dispute highlights gender equity issues in sports and could affect Austria's debut at the women's world championship.
