Autonomous AI Projected to Outperform Doctors Using AI by 2030, Researchers Claim

Researchers argue autonomous AI will surpass AI-assisted physicians on core medical tasks by 2030, citing recent study results.

In a recent JAMA essay, Ezekiel J. Emanuel and Abe Butler-Baker contend that autonomous artificial intelligence will soon outpace both unaided physicians and physicians who employ AI tools across five core cognitive medical tasks—patient history collection, differential diagnosis, cost-effective testing, guideline-aligned treatment, and chronic disease management—by 2030. Their assessment synthesizes all studies published since January 2024 that compare autonomous AI to physicians, finding consistent superiority in areas such as history taking (Google’s AMIE), diagnosis (ChatGPT), test ordering (Microsoft’s AI Diagnostic Orchestrator), prescribing (MIRA), and diabetes management (Stanford study).

Although real-world trials are limited by regulatory and professional resistance, limited clinical data, such as a 461-visit study in Annals of Internal Medicine, also favor AI performance even when physicians have AI assistance. The authors acknowledge current gaps in licensing and liability, proposing new frameworks, and argue that dismissing AI based on simulation concerns ignores the underlying capability. Opponents like AMA CEO John Whyte argue that AI lacks appropriate oversight, that human empathy remains essential, and that simulated results may not translate clinically. The authors warn that delaying real-world testing could deny patients superior care, drawing a historical parallel to the mishandling of President Garfield’s wound.
