Axe assault in Dartmouth leaves woman dead and man injured, suspect detained
A woman in her 40s was found dead and a man with facial injuries was hospitalized after an axe attack at the Church of St Barnabas in Dartmouth, Devon. Police arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of murder.
At around 9.20 p.m. on Tuesday, police, paramedics and an air ambulance converged on the former Church of St Barnabas in Dartmouth, Devon, after reports of a violent incident. A woman in her 40s was found dead, having allegedly been struck with an axe, while a man of the same age sustained facial injuries that required hospital treatment but were not life-changing. A British man in his 30s was detained at the location on suspicion of murder and is being held by Devon & Cornwall Police.
The building, once a restaurant and later a homeless shelter, was cordoned off as forensic teams examined the scene. Detective Inspector Guy Biggar said there is no indication of a wider threat and urged the community to refrain from speculation. Authorities have asked anyone with information or footage to contact police or Crimestoppers.
