Axel Springer backs Abu Dhabi tech outlet The Circuit in Middle East push
German media group Axel Springer announced an investment in The Circuit, a tech and business publication based in Abu Dhabi.
Axel Springer disclosed a new investment in The Circuit, an Abu Dhabi-based outlet that focuses on technology and business news across the Middle East. Founded by Max Neuberger, The Circuit is technically a U.S. corporation with journalists located worldwide. This move follows other Western media ventures such as one outlet’s planned Middle East launch and a journalist at one outlet edition, reflecting heightened interest in the region’s dynamic sectors.
CEO Mathias Döpfner, speaking at a Washington summit, reaffirmed the company’s stance of avoiding investments in nondemocratic regimes, emphasizing a “case-by-case” approach that considers a country’s democratic trajectory. The spokesperson highlighted the UAE’s “positive trajectory” as the basis for the decision, while recalling the firm’s exit from Russia after it became less democratic. Neuberger expressed enthusiasm about the partnership and promised additional information in the near future.
Why it matters
The deal signals growing Western media interest in covering the Middle East’s tech and business landscape.
