Axel Springer launches new Gulf-focused media venture from Abu Dhabi

Axel Springer has set up a new media unit in Abu Dhabi to pursue opportunities across the Gulf region.

Axel Springer has established a new media subsidiary in Abu Dhabi, aiming to capture growth prospects throughout the Gulf region. The expansion arrives shortly after the company completed the purchase of The Telegraph newspaper from Abu Dhabi-supported RedBird IMI and invested in The Circuit, a regional digital publication. Its entry joins a wave of recent Gulf media initiatives, such as Fortune’s Gulf-focused newsletter and one outlet’ Middle East Currents.

While the market is becoming crowded, challenges remain, as illustrated by past difficulties faced by Dubai startup Moniify and pressures on newswire photojournalists during the Iran conflict. Nonetheless, the publisher views the Gulf’s economic rise as a key story of the century, and believes added competition will enhance coverage. The development underscores the region’s growing appeal to global media firms.

Why it matters

The launch shows how major Western media groups are targeting the Gulf’s fast-growing audience and advertising market.
