Babysitter Arrested After 10-Month-Old Dies While Under Her Care in Tasek Gelugor

A 10-month-old boy died after his babysitter found him weak and attempted CPR before rushing him to a clinic, and the 25-year-old caregiver has been detained.

Around 5.40 am the child’s mother dropped off her 10-month-old son at a babysitter’s residence in Tasek Gelugor, reporting that the baby was healthy. At 9.50 am the caregiver observed the infant to be weak and unresponsive after several milk feedings and called her husband to assist with cardiopulmonary resuscitation. They then hurried the child to a government health clinic in Sungai Dua, but he died before arrival.

Initial examinations showed no external bruising, and the cause of death remains under review. Seberang Prai Utara district police, led by Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abdul Rahman, have arrested the 25-year-old babysitter, invoking Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries penalties of up to RM20,000 fine and ten years imprisonment. The babysitter was also responsible for the baby’s two older brothers at the time of the incident.

Why it matters
