Bakersfield gun shop tops state list for firearms later tied to crimes

State data shows Turner’s Outdoorsman in Bakersfield supplied more crime-linked guns than any other California retailer.

According to recently published state data, Turner’s Outdoorsman in Bakersfield recorded the highest number of firearms later connected to crimes, totaling 83, followed by Valley Gun with 78 and Dirty Bird Guns and Ammo with 60. This single outlet’s count exceeds the combined totals of the top five dealers in major markets such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. Juan Avila of the Garden Pathways mentorship program highlighted the unexpected nature of the statistic for a city of Bakersfield’s size.

The Bakersfield Police Department stated it is unaware of any illegal sales, while Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn has urged a probe into the retailer’s practices. Customers like Obed Munoz argue the store follows proper procedures and that responsibility lies with individuals who commit crimes. Turner’s Outdoorsman asserts it adheres to all legal requirements and that trace data does not indicate wrongdoing.

Why it matters

The findings raise questions about gun sales oversight in a city with a high rate of crime-linked firearms.
